AGROECOLOGICAL TESTING OF COLORED-FLESHED POTATO VARIETIES UNDER IRRIGATION ON THE VOLGA UPLAND SOUTHERN SLOPE

Annotation

Purpose: to assess the adaptive potential and provide a scientific basis for selecting modern domestic potato varieties with colored flesh, for cultivation under irrigation in the southern regions of Russia including comparison with foreign varieties. In recent years, there has been increased attention to the use of potatoes as a significant source of natural antioxidants, particularly in dietary and specialized nutrition. Potatoes with red and purple flesh are of particular dietary value, as they contain polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant properties, especially anthocyanins.

Materials and methods. Field studies to select and test varieties were conducted in 2022–2024 on the experimental field of the All-Russian Research Institute of Irrigated Agriculture (VNIIOZ) with 5 potato varieties of domestic and foreign selection. Sprinkler irrigation was used. The studies were carried out in accordance with generally accepted methods.

Results. The Lyubava variety produced the highest marketable tuber weight (118 g), while the Elixir variety produced the lowest (64 g). The Severnoye Siyanie variety was the most productive, with 30.5 t/ha among the potato varieties studied. In Elixir plantings, the yield was 1.9 t/ha lower. The most valuable and recommended varieties in terms of ecological plasticity (bi) and stable yield (S²di) are Severnoye Siyanie (bi = 2.96; S²di = 14.23) and Elixir (bi = 2.32; S²di = 22.23).

Conclusions. In a study of colored-fleshed potato varieties, the Severnoye Siyanie variety demonstrated the best results, achieving a yield of 30.5 t/ha with ecological flexibility and yield stability (bi = 2.96; S²di = 14.23). Furthermore, the Elixir variety demonstrated high productivity, achieving a yield of 28.6 t/ha with adaptability potential (bi = 2.32; S²di = 22.23). These varieties are recognized as the most suitable for cultivation under irrigated conditions on the southern slope of the Volga Upland.
