The production of drainage works in the South of Russia was analyzed historically which is closely associated with the scientific activities of Russian Research Institute of Land Improvement Problems (former Southern Research Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Land Reclamation). Main stages of the production of drainage works are highlighted including the application of different tools and devices, use of foreign equipment, development and use of Russian drain-installing complexes and development of the system of drainage operation. To characterize each stage the main indicators of drainage system were used, such as machinery, the size of drainage trench, complex of auxiliary equipment, and the method of drain building. The technologies and technological schemes of the subsurface drainage system are briefly described. In order to renew regulatory base for design, building and operation of the drainage at irrigative lands it is suggested to develop the standard of organization for building subsurface drainage system at the agricultural lands. The article concludes the necessity of resumption the monitoring of irrigative lands for ameliorative status and organizing divisions for drainage operating on the extra-budgetary base.
