THE STUDY OF THE BANK PROTECTION STRUCTURE EFFICIENCY AT THE PROLETARSKY MAIN CANAL

Annotation

Purpose: to evaluate the effectiveness of bank protection structures represented by a partially lined earth dam on a section of the Proletarsky Main Canal.

Materials and methods. Field surveys of main canal sections, which made it possible to establish the geometric characteristics of the object, to assess visually the technical condition of single hydraulic structures, and to predict the causes of their deformations and increased seepage losses, were conducted. The seepage studies were based on A. Ya. Oleynik’s seepage resistance method, which is used at close groundwater occurrence (for backwater conditions). When determining the stability factor of the canal’s bank protection coatings, the graphic-analytical method based on the static calculation of individual vertical elements (Fellenius method) was used.

Results. The seepage flow rates obtained by calculation were 34.1–34.5 cub. m/day per 100 m for two sections studied, that exceeds the permissible parameters for this type of structure and the soils composing it. The parameters of a possible rise in the groundwater level in the canal area were determined by calculation, and equations describing the model were obtained with high determination coefficients R² = 0.9913 and R² = 0.9909. The stability factor of the canal earth dam in section picket 1790 was 1.33, which corresponds to the standard for the considered conditions.

Conclusions. Increased seepage losses (up to 34.5 cub. m/day) were revealed on sections of the Proletarsky Main Canal from picket 1790 to picket 1794, causing a rise in groundwater and flooding of the canal areas. The stability factor is within the permissible limits at the level of 1.2–1.5. The canal technical condition at picket 1794 has been assessed as critical due to the destruction of supports, seepage, and suffusion processes. Anti-seepage measures are required to ensure continued safe operation.
